About the Artist
- Chris James-
"I believe, artistically, that I can never stop growing."
With a burning passion for art and a lifelong dream of creating captivating tattoos, I have wholeheartedly dedicated myself to honing my craft. Continuously seeking opportunities for growth and improvement, I am an ardent student of the tattooing world.
What truly ignites my spirit is the privilege of collaborating with an array of individuals, each with their own distinct vision, and transforming their ideas into tangible works of art. Tattooing allows me to delve into diverse art styles, and with every tattoo, I embrace the chance to breathe fresh life into their concepts, making each one an extraordinary and unparalleled creation.
Beyond the realm of tattooing, I thrive in various artistic mediums. From wielding colored pencils and acrylic paints to embracing the digital realm and pen and ink, I revel in the wide spectrum of creative expression available to me. Gratitude fills my heart for every person who entrusts me with their skin as a canvas, as well as for the unwavering support of my incredible friends and family. Their belief in me has played an instrumental role in transforming my dreams into a vivid reality.
Born in the vibrant city of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1987, art class quickly became the highlight of my school years. I owe a debt of gratitude to the exceptional teachers who shaped my artistic journey, their influence leaving an indelible mark on my soul. Interestingly, while my parents themselves had no tattoos, their unwavering support and encouragement have been the pillars of strength throughout my artistic odyssey. From the moment I laid eyes on my uncle's majestic panther tattoo at the tender age of 9, I was captivated. Its presence left an indelible mark on my young mind, etching a burning passion for the world of tattoos. At the age of 14, I made a resolute decision: I would become a tattoo artist. Excitedly, I shared my ambitious goal with my father, only to be met with skepticism. "That's the last thing I would want you to do with your life," he quipped. Little did he know that his jest would evolve into a proud appreciation of my chosen path. Today, he jokingly admits, "Maybe I should have warned you against becoming a doctor instead!" A defining moment arrived when I was 17. I embarked on a journey to visit my girlfriend's brother in Illinois, where I witnessed the intricate artistry of a tattoo being brought to life. The experience ignited an unquenchable fire within me. Upon returning home, I dedicated an entire summer to toiling and saving every penny. With my hard-earned savings, I delved into the vast realm of the internet and ordered my very own tattoo kit. For a year, I honed my skills in the confines of my own home, tattooing friends who believed in my burgeoning talent.
As high school drew to a close, I realized it was time to embark on a professional journey.
Eagerly, I sought out an apprenticeship, pounding the pavement of my hometown, Oshkosh. Yet, luck eluded me, with each door closing before me. Undeterred by rejection, I cast my hopes further afield, setting my sights on Fond du Lac. Persistence paid off, and at long last, I discovered an apprenticeship opportunity that beckoned me. Marking the beginning of my pursuit to become a professional tattooist. As time went on, my mentor made the decision to relocate back to Milwaukee, leaving me to take charge of the studio where I initially apprenticed. For over a decade, I successfully operated my own studio, fortunate enough to collaborate with numerous talented artists who played a significant role in my artistic growth. However, as the years passed, the building housing my studio fell into disrepair, burdening me with overwhelming financial responsibilities. Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to sell the property, seizing the opportunity to make a change and return to my roots in Oshkosh, my beloved hometown.
After returning, I found myself back in Oshkosh, where I embarked on a year-long journey working at Oshkosh Tattoo and Good Girl Piercing. It was during this period that I had the privilege of connecting with incredible artists and remarkable individuals. It became clear to me that it was time to strike out on my own once again. I made the decision to rent a cozy private studio, which became my artistic sanctuary.
In July of 2023, I took a momentous step forward after dedicating 2.5 years to my craft in a small private studio in Oshkosh. This decision was the culmination of relentless hard work, unwavering dedication, and countless sacrifices. Purchased a historic property built in 1896, located in Oshkosh's historic 9th Ward.
I am thrilled to announce the birth of Blackstone Tattoos, my brand-new tattoo studio. I am deeply grateful to all the incredible individuals who have consistently chosen me as their tattoo artist for the past 18 years, traveling from Fond du Lac and beyond throughout the years. Your unwavering support has made it possible for me to pursue my passion and live a life I love.
I eagerly anticipate welcoming each and every one of you to my new location, where fresh artistic experiences await.
